DOT ALCOHOL TESTING
Reasons for Certified Alcohol Testing
The Department of Transportation (DOT) requires employers to conduct alcohol testing under a variety of circumstances.

-
Employees involved in an accident, may need to carry out post-accident DOT alcohol testing
-
Alcohol tests may also be required if a supervisor:
-
Has reason to suspect an employee is misusing alcohol
-
Return-to-duty
-
Follow-up reasons
-
-
Additionally, random alcohol testing is required under DOT regulations.
Understanding Strict DOT Alcohol Testing Regulations
When it comes to alcohol testing, DOT regulations are fairly strict. The device used to detect alcohol use, known as an evidential breath testing device, or EBT must be approved by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Additionally, the EBT can only be operated by a certified breath alcohol technician.
Various circumstances will result in an automatic failed DOT alcohol test result, including:

-
Refusal to take a breath alcohol test
-
Refusal to complete and/or sign the testing form
-
Refusal to provide adequate breath
-
Test result of 0.04 blood alcohol content or higher
-
Refusal to cooperate with any part of the testing process
